In the years 2013-2014, Ms. Segal was the Joint Director of Tazpit Press Service (TPS), the only Israeli news agency disseminating news reports and footage in real-time from Israel to media outlets across the world. Ms. Segal has a BA in Law from the University of Haifa, and an MA in International Relations from the University of Tel Aviv. She is an expert on the Middle East and International law.
Israel has a valid legal claim to the territories and Palestine is not a state. What the international community has understood for many years is that this conflict must be resolved by negotiations between the parties and not by bypassing them.
Yifa Segal explains why Palestine is not a State under international law – especially under the question of ‘territory’ and the question of ‘effective control’ over that territory and population. She further lays out the implications for the international legal order, if one were to follow the ICC Prosecutor’s interpretation of the Palestinian right to self-determination as equaling the right to sovereignty and independence and applying that logic to all the world’s ethnic groups or religious groups.
